Registration
The KBB 2020 Band & Orchestra Showcase invites participants to submit:
Approximately 10 minutes of video footage of your band/orchestra performing some of their 2020 repertoire. The festival may be able to coordinate assistance for this process if needed.
A three-minute, behind-the-scenes video revealing the ‘unique character’ of your ensemble; the sort of thing that the audience at KBBMF never gets to see.
These videos will be compiled and uploaded to the newly create KBB Music Festival YouTube channel.
We would like entrants to register their intention to participate in the online festival by Wednesday July 1st, to give us time to prepare.
Videos would need to be uploaded to the KBB Music Festival Website by Friday 21st August to be eligible for awards. There is no competitive aspect to this year’s musical performances, but our sponsors have offered to select their picks of the best/funniest/most effective behind-the-scenes videos and offer some fun prizes.
Ideally groups would submit videos in both categories. We will perform some minimal processing on the footage to achieve some consistency by attaching identifying festival logos/title screens etc. Depending on the situation faced by your department, you may find that it is only realistic to bring off one of these video projects, not both. You are still welcome to submit one project and not the other.
Schools with multiple ensembles are of course welcome to submit multiple videos.
There will be NO FEE for involvement in the KBB Music Festival during 2020.
Performance Video
Ideally, videos of performance repertoire would be between 5 and 10 minutes duration. Total duration cannot exceed 11 minutes.
Video files should be in either MP4 or .MOV format.
These performances themselves will not be judged, so please do not feel the pressure to create flawless performances. You will have the opportunity to receive some supportive written feedback on your performance should you wish.
Performance repertoire could be one large work, or a selection of short works.
Please send only one video file. If you have recorded multiple pieces in separate takes, please edit them together into one file before sending.
The circumstances of your video recording are up to you; it may be:
Filmed in front of a live audience as part of an organised performance if your ensemble has the opportunity do this,
Filmed at an organised recording session with only the ensemble in attendance.
Filmed at one of your rehearsals.
Ideally the group would be dressed in the manner that they would normally appear at the festival. This is not compulsory.
In order to create a sense of familiarity and continuity, the festival Committee would like, where possible, to send a representative to your recording session to participate in the performance in some way. Perhaps by:
introducing some repertoire, or
introducing the Musical Director,
introducing the ensemble etc.
This is not compulsory but would be appreciated where possible.
Please indicate on your entry form if you would be open to discussing how this might work.
Most schools will be able to make video recordings with their own equipment (using video cameras, iPads etc) and, if need be, to make the simple edits required to trim and paste the recordings together into a single track which could be uploaded to an internet location.
However, we do not want either lack of access to equipment/or lack of experience in recording an ensemble to become a barrier to participation. If you feel that you are not able to undertake a recording of your own ensemble and would like some assistance, the festival committee may be able to help.
On the entry form, please indicate which aspect/s of the video recording you would like help with.
As part of the process of uploading your entry you will be required to complete a media release form, giving the festival rights to publish your performance videos on media platforms.
Behind The Scenes Video
Performances at the KBB Music are usually quite a formal affair, with good reason. Performers and musical directors are keen to demonstrate their skills, communicate with the audience and convince the adjudicators of their commitment to the composer’s intentions. This usually results in a lot of well-directed nervous energy and focus on the music. However, this year we would like to give ensembles a chance to show us what lies behind the professionalism; to show the world what KBB Music Festival groups are like when they’re not performing.
Festival sponsors have offered to judge these behind-the-scenes videos – making awards to some of the best/most creative/most entertaining examples.
Ideally, this project would be student led to give an opportunity for senior students/leaders to make a memorable contribution to their group in 2020.
Behind the scenes videos may be up to (not over) 3 minutes long.
Tell us about your ensemble or tell us a story from your ensemble. The following ideas might help you get started:
What is your group called?
What does your rehearsal space look like?
What usually goes on in rehearsals?
Introduce your Musical Director.
What are the best things about being involved in your group?
What kinds of things does your group do throughout the year?
What else do you want the world to know?
Don’t be afraid to make your video entertaining/funny – but make sure that the content is an appropriate reflection of the values of your school.
As part of the process of uploading your entry you will be required to complete a media release form, giving the festival rights to publish the content of this video on media platforms.
